Buzz My Day
The receipt was safely tucked away in a certain corner of my bilabong wallet. That piece of paper was our proof of signing up for the Buzz My Day contest which was organized by SBS Transit. With the lure of a chance to win a free year's worth of concession and a thousand dollar watch for the first prize winner at a cost of a mere mc chicken plus 50 cents more, we had to go for it.The day finally came. 23 June 2007. With VIVO City as the registration and briefing point for all 250 teams participating, the journey there consisted of more people heading there than compared to a normal day. Upon meeting mahdi and adam at tanah merah and zul boarding the same train at aljunied, we were geared up for the challenge albeit that we have a temporarily handicapped person within our midst, who happens to be adam who sprained his ankle the previous saturday. However, that did not leave a big enough obstacle to get to the carrot that was being dangled in front of our faces. Upon reaching VIVO, we had to proceed to the registration counter located beyond the glass doors that separates VIVO City and a small area that was tent aged. With a MC trying to get things moving smoothly by using a mic occurring in the background, we looked for a queue indicating our team's number to queue at. The registration was a breeze. In no time, we found ourselves seated at macdonalds nearby with a event t shirt and a translink guide book each. Zul was the only one who had eaten before we met, so the three of us bought a meal each to fill our stomachs for the race to come. The time read 10am exactly when we were done with our meals and with 40mins to spare, adam started writing the bus numbers that stopped at VIVO. After he was done, we felt that it was inadequate, so i added in the interchanges that all the buses either departs or terminates. 10.25am. We took our time walking back to the assembly area and upon reaching there, there were alot of people gathered at the tent aged area, listening intently to what the mc had to say. we quickly donned on our event t shirts and joined the masses. the mc instructed all the group leaders to proceed to an area where they would distribute the question booklets. after collecting it, we were only allowed to read and try to plan our routes. should anyone write on it, a bonus 10 points would be immediately forfeited. 11am. the race finally began. our first pitstop that was compulsory to go, toa payoh interchange. we took the NEL to boon keng and took 31 from there. it felt kind of weird not taking out the ez link card to tap but walk through without paying. it felt kinda good actually. something different for a change. upon reaching there, we had to find a buzz pod where the marshalls and a task awaited us. we had to take 4 pictures with a pepsi stand which has to feature everyone in the group to make 4 different poses. (uploaded it on friendster) than we had to find the website address of a mediacorp radio station. a major flaw that the organisers overlooked was that since it was the first compulsory pitstop, they should have put more marshalls there to oversee and supervise instead of just a table and 2 pepsi stands for 250 groups to take pictures with. it was a damned route to overcrowding in a narrow corridor. jostling and pushing was a common sight. We were able to plan our own routes after that and we were so grateful for that. at least the other pit stops would be less crowded as everyone would have different check points to go to. our next stop was to be chinatown but we changed it on the way there as another check point that we had to go to was nearer to our position than chinatown. it was singapore post at paya lebar which was on the way to chinatown. after making a short detour which consisted of 2 train rides, a mad run for the bus and a bit of walking. upon reaching there, we had to find yet another buzz pod with a ticker box located at the top to answer 3 riddles posted up. i copied it down to think on the bus instead of wasting time standing around trying to figure out the answer. we had to walk to the malay village to take a picture with the sign located in it and make our way to chinatown. however, our trip to chinatown was not to be. we took the wrong bus and ended up at some random place instead of our planned destination. the waiting time for the right bus took too long and we had to be back by 3pm, so we scrapped the idea of chinatown and headed back for harbourfront. reaching there with a mere 5 minutes to spare, we thought of the consequences should we travelled to chinatown, immediate disqualification for being late. thanking our lucky stars, i handed in the booklet and we went to collect our free goodie bags. than, we checked out the candy floss and popcorn that was given out free of charge. not bad for a event that we paid $2.50 each. bundles of freebies for that small cost. at 5pm that same day, the results were announced but sadly, we did not win anything. however, we gained something. that was the ties that were thickened between us as we went through each obstacle. looking back, a team that formed with a group of 4 that just met not long ago may not have done what we did. with adam not being able to walk properly, at certain parts, each of us took a part in making his walking abit less painful by supporting him or even carry him which mahdi did at one point. even when we were running for the bus, mahdi and zul ran infront to hold the bus for adam and i who was supporting adam in running. that would only happen with friends that have grew a friendship over 5 years. Time flies
My last post was on May 27. Ages ago. hahas.. oh wells. time flies. Its amazing how time travels so fast without realising it. In a blink of an eye, i have been working at cartel for 6 months already. 6 whole months. half a year. 24 weeks. It feels like i just started work yesterday.. Council camp 2007. last yr's batch that stood down were invited to be part of the stand down for this year. but we could only step in to the school at 8pm.. so we met for dinner first. headed to parkway to meet everyone and we walked around first before sitting ourselves down at pastamania for dinner. i ordered the creamy chicken pasta and a certain set b, which consisted of a soup and a drink. its a few dollars cheaper than cartel but not compromising on the quality. after the guys finished our meals, we left the ladies behind to entertain ourselves with some arcade games. than we finally were able to head for school. The standdown cermony commenced shortly after our applaused arrival into the ever same avt that we used to come to. everything was still there. the piano, the computer table, the white board, the benches. The place brings back memories of the motivational camp held by adam khoo during our last year in temasek. yet again, time flew. instead of listening to ramesh, the motivational teacher, we listened to the speeches made by the councillors who had to standdown. i truly wonder if they ever feel sad to leave council, or temasek for that matter. i feel that spending 5 years in the school, with the same class throughout left a huge inprint in my life. rather than just coming to temasek for 4 years and changing classes every year, we had the opportunity to bond as a class for 5 whole years. to work, to study and play as a class. the bond between everyone is comparable to a sibling type of bond and nothing can change that. helping, encouraging, cheering for our classmate is part and parcel of what happens in the class. i feel as if the 5 years has made the whole class bond together like 42 sticks which once stood alone and vulnerable joined together to form a bundle that is hard to break or separate. After the standdown, the councillors proceeded on with the confidence walk and surprisingly, miss lim allowed us to stay for it. I said surprisingly as the previous camp, she chased us away before the confidence walk as she claimed a certain reason that none of us felt it was worth the miss. it was to be the last confidence walk we had with the current sec 4 councillors as they would suffer the same fate as us when they come for the next camp, by being chased home by miss lim. the confidence walk had to have screams to make it more real and fun but sadly, we were deprived of screaming for fearing of disturbing the neighbours of the school and mr oh's camp. after the camp, our luck ran out as we were chased home by miss lim. or chased to my house for that matter. a handful of councillors came over to my house to spend the night. mad, aud, sherm, louis, lee wei, and alex were the ones who get to see my house for the last time before i shift. It was fun... the guys slept in my room while mad, sherm and i accompanied aud who wanted to study at the courtyard. best of all, the weather threatened to let all hell break loose and we had the luxury of strong winds constantly blowing in our faces. the least sleep someone had was an hour i think. at around 8am the next morning, we headed to the mac at bedok to fill our stomachs with what mac breakfast has to offer. than everyone went their separate ways to head home to their nice comfy beds. had the first major 5a outing after the o levels results day on the 14 of june. most of us gathered at harbourfront mrt at 9 plus in the morning. destination? sentosa. upon reaching there, we tried to find a nice spot to dump our bags and head for the sand. that did not happen long and soon enough, the guys were having a soccer match on the hard and hot sand. after playing for a while, the heat from the sand and sun took its toll on some and they eventually pulled out of the game. so some of us had to find another game to play while mahdi and arvind started to play throw and catch with their softball equipment. so zul, khalee, singh, nas, khalee's friend and i started a game of volleyball. we made our own rules and soon enough, we were have so much fun until mahdi also came and joined us. later on in the afternoon, we headed for the beach and someone had a brilliant idea of burying charles into the sand while we decorate his appearance with all the sand around us. that took us a good 2 hours as we were having so much fun trying to see what looks good on him. in the end, his appearance was of a girl and a boy plus a mermaid. totally hilarious! than we took some group pictures while we left charles in the sand. until arvind decided to join him for a picture's sake. so we had 2 indians in the sand. at around 3 plus 4, we were all starting to get hungry and tired. so we headed for the showers first and later on simpang bedok for some roti john. we dispersed after that to conclude a fun 5a outing. 3 years. Thats how long i have since moved house and i can still remember every single little detail of what happened when we shifted. my old house was located on a road called jalan kathi, a stone throw away from the main road, bedok road. On that day, the movers came and piled our cartons after cartons of belongings into their trucks and took them to a warehouse for the time being. when they left, the house was barren. we had to go through every cupboard that was built in to the wall to check for items that we may have forgotten to take or throw. the smell of fresh wood replaced what used to be a homely type of smell. my dad bought some lunch for everyone, nasi brani. and we had to eat with our hands while sitting on the floor as everything was gone. the dining table, the plates and the forks and spoons. yeah. Well. i'm shifting house again next Wednesday. so the current house is in a huge mess with cartons stacked on top of one another and places which used to have items are now bare. One would wonder if we're going for a battle of some sort. all the belongings seen around would soon be replaced by the sight of an unsightly carton. come wed, the house would once again be barren as what used to be called home would no longer be again. everything would be quiet. peaceful. calm. however, all hell would break loose at the new place as we try to unpack and get things organised in order to settle down to a place that we would call home. my dad has it all planned out. he will go to the new house while i will stay with my mum at the soon going to be old house to facilitate the moving. Everyone's almost finished packing. all's left are all the important stuffs that have to be packed in last minute like clothes and toiletries just to name a few. all ready to face the battle next wedesday. to tell you the truth, i'm half hearted about moving. in life, there are the pros and cons. the pros about moving: new room, bigger?/ nearer to all my friends' houses?/convenience at my doorstep with tampines mart just a block away./don't have to worry about where to get food at 3am./new house the cons: no more swimming pool/ no more gym/ no more street soccer court nearby/ no more bus services that are most frequently taken, like 12/ big house to a smaller house/ no more sense of security (shoes can be left outside without anyone taking it)/ not so near a mrt station yeah. there should be more but i can't think of anymore at the moment. oh well. we're moving and nothing can change that fact. |
